U.S. Department of Energy issues request for information on renewable propane and other gas feedstocks

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has published Request for Information (RFI) on Renewable Propane Production Technologies and Applications to better understand the supply chains for the production and applications of renewable propane and other renewable gas feedstocks. In particular, this RFI (DE-FOA-0003389) seeks input from industry and other stakeholders that produce or are considering producing renewable propane on the potential to increase its cost-effectiveness in order to develop new pathways for the production of sustainable aviation fuels and other high-impact products.

In the United States, average propane consumption is about one million barrels per day, accounting for about 1% of total energy consumption. Propane is used primarily for residential and commercial heating, industrial purposes, including the production of chemicals and plastics, and agricultural applications. Traditionally derived as a byproduct of natural gas processing or a byproduct of oil refining, renewable propane has recently become an emerging byproduct or product in the biofuels sector, where production uses municipal waste, agricultural residues, forest resources, and fats, oils, and greases.

The purpose of this RFI is also to collect information on the costs and benefits for a refinery that hydroprocesses biogenic fats, oils and greases using renewable propane produced at location as process energy compared to the separation recovery of renewable propane intended for sale on the propane market.

RFI questions can be divided into two categories:

  • Production of propane and other gaseous intermediate products in the hydroprocessing of fats, oils and greases of biogenic origin;
  • Production of propane and other gaseous intermediate products from municipal waste, agricultural residues and forestry residues.
