County Code Rules Topics Discussed at GPICA Meeting | News, Sports, Jobs

Last Tuesday, July 2, at its monthly meeting, the Greater Pine Island Civic Association invited William Diaz, Code Enforcement Manager with the Lee County Department of Community Development, to answer questions regarding zoning enforcement in the Pine Island/Matlacha area, including an update on enforcement efforts related to Hurricane Ian.

One of the islanders asked if anything could be done about the houses on the island, which had apparently been abandoned since Hurricane Ian.

Diaz said his department is currently operating normally. While he acknowledges he is a lifelong Southwest Florida resident, he has seen many storms that have hit the area, and Ian was the worst, in his opinion. Diaz asked anyone to report concerns or contact the county if their property still needs to be measured.

Diaz explained that many people wrongly assumed that county officials could step in and expropriate property, an assumption that became clear after Hurricane Ian.

“We do not condemn structures” Diaz said.

The same applies to district companies that install padlocks, he added.

The member asked if there was a way to contact the coding office if the alleged violation is in issue. Diaz encouraged anyone with a potential violation to email the county as their preferred method of communication.

The office’s email address is [email protected]. You can also call 239-533-8895.
