Green Action Trust appoints new CEO

Environmental charity Green Action Trust has appointed Tom Campbell as its new chief executive.

Working with local authorities and private and third sector partners, the charity addresses climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental inequality by delivering environmental restoration projects across Scotland.

Mr Campbell joined Green Action Trust in 2023 as Chief Strategy Officer and took up the role of Chief Executive Officer on an interim basis in February 2024.

Speaking about his appointment, Mr Campbell said he was looking forward to “pragmatically” addressing Scotland’s impact on the global climate, protecting habitats and supporting biodiversity.

Tom Campbell said: “Having served as Interim CEO for a number of months, I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue the excellent work of the organisation. Along with the team, I am committed to creating lasting change with pragmatism, making a real difference to people’s lives, protecting habitats and encouraging biodiversity.

“I’m particularly looking forward to strengthening our work to combat environmental injustice and expanding our partnerships. We work in some of Scotland’s most deprived areas and we want to expand our reach, but we need to ensure this is done with the support of policymakers, private businesses and, of course, communities themselves. By regenerating environments, creating safe routes for active travel, encouraging biodiversity and more, we are bringing communities together and helping them to thrive.”

The Green Action Trust leads and administers the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), a 40-year programme funded by the Scottish Government that aims to change the face of central Scotland by restoring and enhancing its rural and urban landscapes.

Covering 10,000 square kilometres, CSGN is one of the largest and most ambitious green infrastructure programmes in Europe, operating in 87% of Scotland’s most deprived areas. The programme has supported the planting of over 20 million trees since its inception.

Commenting on the appointment, Green Action Trust Chairman Michael Roe said: “We are delighted to appoint Tom as our permanent Chief Executive. He understands the rich history of the charity and our strong track record of delivering meaningful restoration through both CSGN and the Green Action Trust. He also recognises our potential to do more and extend our reach by expanding and strengthening our partnerships with local authorities and private businesses that align with our mission.

“Under Tom’s leadership we look forward to continued growth and environmental and social impact across Scotland.”

Prior to joining Green Action Trust, Mr Campbell held CEO and director positions in several organisations and sectors, including being the architect of the North Coast 500. He created, developed and implemented the tour and, as its Executive Chairman, led the brand to global recognition.
