Green Action Trust appoints new CEO

One of Scotland’s leading environmental charities, Green Action Trust, has appointed Tom Campbell as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The charity addresses the issues of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental inequality by delivering environmental restoration projects across Scotland.

Mr Campbell joined Green Action Trust in 2023 as Chief Strategy Officer and took on the role of Chief Executive Officer on an interim basis in February 2024.

Speaking about his appointment, Mr Campbell said he was looking forward to “pragmatically” addressing Scotland’s impact on the global climate, protecting habitats and supporting biodiversity.

Tom Campbell said: “Having served as interim CEO for several months, I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue the excellent work of the organisation.

“My team and I want to drive lasting change in a pragmatic way, making a real difference to people’s lives while protecting habitats and supporting biodiversity.

“I am particularly excited about the opportunity to strengthen our work to combat environmental injustice and expand our partnerships.

“We operate in some of the most deprived areas of Scotland and we want to expand our reach, but we need to make sure that this is done with the support of policy makers, private industry and, of course, communities themselves.

“By restoring environments, creating safe routes for active travel, promoting biodiversity and more, we unite communities and help them thrive.”

The Green Action Trust leads and administers the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), a 40-year-old programme funded by the Scottish Government.

The Foundation works to change the face of central Scotland by regenerating and improving its rural and urban landscape.

Covering an area of 10,000 square kilometres, CSGN is one of the largest and most ambitious green infrastructure programmes in Europe and operates in 87% of Scotland’s most deprived areas.

Since the inception of the programme, over 20 million trees have been planted.

Commenting on the appointment, Michael Roe, Chair of the Green Action Trust, said: “We are delighted to appoint Tom as our permanent CEO.

“He understands the rich history of the charity and our extensive experience of delivering significant regeneration work through both CSGN and the Green Action Trust.

“It also recognizes our potential to do more and expand our reach by expanding and strengthening our partnerships with local governments and private businesses that align with our mission.”

“Under Tom’s leadership we look forward to continued growth and environmental and social impact across Scotland.”

Prior to joining Green Action Trust, Mr Campbell held CEO and director positions in a number of organisations and sectors and was an architect of the North Coast 500.

“He created, developed and implemented the concert tour and, as its CEO, brought the brand to global recognition.
