Underwater UAVs, Regional Navigation System and More: DRDO awards 7 cutting-edge defence projects to start-ups and SMEs

The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has awarded seven new projects to industries under the Technology Development Fund for various requirements of the armed forces, aerospace and defence sectors, in a move aimed at strengthening the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat programme.

As the government said in a press release, these projects are awarded to SMEs and start-ups operating in the defence and aerospace sectors.

The Indigenous Scenario and Sensor Simulation Toolkit Project involves developing an indigenous toolkit for pilot training in realistic scenario simulators. This will help in comprehensive mission planning and large force engagement. The project has been awarded to a start-up, Oxygen 2 Innovation Pvt Ltd, Noida.

Pune-based Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt Ltd has bagged the award for its design of a submarine-launched unmanned aerial vehicle with versatile maritime warfare accessories that can be used in multiple combat roles. The objective is to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and maritime domain awareness (MDA).

Kochi-based start-up IROV Technologies Pvt Ltd will manufacture long-range remotely operated vehicles to detect and neutralise underwater objects while keeping key assets away from suspected operational area

The project for development of Ice Detection Sensor for Aircraft aims to develop detection of in-flight icing conditions caused by supercooled water droplets that freeze on impact with the external surfaces of the aircraft and are used by the aircraft to activate the anti-icing mechanism. It has been awarded to Craftlogic Labs Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru.

The radar signal processor with active antenna array simulator will enable deployment of multiple target systems for testing and evaluation of multiple short range air weapon systems. It serves as a basic building block for larger radar systems. The design has been approved by Data Pattern (India) Limited, Chennai.

The project for development of an Indian regional satellite navigation system based on timekeeping and dissemination has been approved by Accord Software & Systems Pvt Ltd., Bengaluru. The objective of the project is to enable local manufacturing of timekeeping and dissemination systems, to leverage the Indian constellation of timekeeping satellites and to develop a customized and flexible timekeeping system as per the coverage requirements.

Coimbatore-based startup Alohatech Private Limited will develop graphene-based smart and electronic textiles for multifunctional apparel applications. It will develop conductive yarns and fabric manufacturing processes using graphene nanomaterials and conductive inks. The result will be advanced electronic textiles based on nanocomposite materials that leverage their inherent advantages for practical apparel applications.
