Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 – First Impressions

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have been announced globally. In India, the new foldable smartphones from Samsung are already available for pre-order and will go on sale from July 24. At first glance, the new foldable smartphones seem identical to their predecessors, but when you take a closer look, you will see the changes that have made a difference.

Of all the smartphone manufacturers in the world, Samsung stands out for its AI strategy for its Galaxy devices. It all started in January of this year with the S series of smartphones, and now we have AI features expanding to more Galaxy devices. Under-the-hood changes aside, the company has completely reimagined the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 in terms of AI integration in software, which we’ll dive into in a bit.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 Price in India

The all-new foldable models are Rs 10,000 more expensive than their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 starts at Rs 109,999 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, while the 12GB RAM and 512GB storage model costs Rs 121,999.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 price starts at Rs 1,64,999 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model, while there are two more models available — 12GB + 512GB storage for Rs 1,76,999 and 12GB + 1TB storage for Rs 2,00,999.

This year, Samsung has increased the base amount of RAM in the Flip 6, now standing at 12GB instead of 8GB in the Flip 5, which is good progress.

The company has left no stone unturned to attract customers and has also introduced the Galaxy Z Assurance package, which offers two screen/parts replacement packages worth INR 9,999 (Rs 999) for the Flip 6 and the same offer for the Fold 6 worth INR 14,999 (Rs 999).

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6: AI, AI and more AI

During the foldable smartphone preview, Samsung confirmed that AI was the second most important feature that people bought the S24 series for, and that it made sense to bring AI features to the next-generation foldable smartphones. Well, Samsung did not disappoint.

There are a ton of AI features built into the Samsung Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, but I’ll just go over a few of the standout features and leave the rest for our review.

Galaxy’s new foldable phones are packed with AI features

Both foldable models are equipped with a completely new Interpreter feature that can translate on the spot and uses two screens for face-to-face conversations. The company calls it Conversation modeand can be useful if you’re traveling to a place where you don’t speak the local language. The Note app is already popular with Galaxy users, and Samsung has added a few new tricks. For example, you can use Notes Help for things like automatic transcription, translation, and meeting summarization, all by recording your voice in Notes. Then there’s PDF Overlay translation, which can translate a PDF file into a language pack you’ve already downloaded to your device. If you have the language pack, Samsung emphasizes that the feature works on your device — a nice touch.

There is also Live translationintroduced earlier this year, which translates conversations in real time. The company confirmed that the feature will be available in some third-party apps. Next up, the Fold 6 is getting Sketch to Image, a fun AI feature added this year where you can sketch something and the AI creates works of art. For example, one thing we tried was drawing a tree on the side of the road. And we weren’t very good at our drawing, but the AI picked them up and presented a bunch of options — a handy feature for new Fold 6 users.

Some little extras include: Composerthat seamlessly creates messages based on short inputs and AI-suggested responses, where the Galaxy device suggests some responses based on text. There is also Translation overlaythat can be instantly translated on any screen – just open the camera and point at the board in another language, and the Fold 6 or Flip 6 will do the work. Samsung also added Portrait Studiowhere you can click portraits of your friends or pets and try out different portrait styles, including 3D cartoons. Samsung has also added homework math problem-solving feature that you can use by clicking on a picture of a math problem. Using Google, you’ll get results with a step-by-step guide on how to solve the problem. For the Flip 6, Samsung has introduced Flex Camwhich supports auto zoom when it detects a subject and automatically zooms in to capture the best angle. This feature can be useful for using the Flip 6 camera setup. Of course, Search Circle applies to new folding models and requires no introduction.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6: First Impressions

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is now the thinnest and lightest book-style foldable Samsung has ever made. Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (253 grams), the Fold 6 weighs 239 grams. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max weighs 221 grams. The good thing is that this design change is visible and can be felt when using the device. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 still falls short as a phone that can be used one-handed for most tasks. The fold is not as pronounced as on the Galaxy Fold 5; there is a slight improvement.

The Galaxy Fold 6 has a 7.6-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED display with a maximum brightness of 2600 nits

Samsung emphasized that the hinge is improved and more durable — something we see every year with incremental updates. The display is bright, and the color reproduction is top-notch. The maximum brightness of 2,600 nits does the job well, but more on the display in our review . The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor powers both new foldables. Samsung’s other big claim was the vapor chamber, which is said to be the largest ever used in a Galaxy Z device. Again, we can only confirm this after running our performance tests. On paper, the cameras seem almost identical to those in the Fold 5. We’ll leave the verdict on the camera for our review. The battery — a 4,400mAh unit — remains the same as in the Fold 5.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has an improved main camera and a larger battery

Coming to the Flip 6, Samsung’s clamshell-style foldable phone gets some serious upgrades this year. Starting with the main camera, the Flip 6 gets a 50-megapixel main sensor and a bigger 4,000mAh battery compared to the 3,700mAh in the Flip 5. Both the new foldable phones are IP48 water-resistant. The fold on the Flip 6 is almost invisible as we were scrolling through it while using the device and could barely see it. The display seems decent and the improved camera is excellent on the Flip 6. Performance was top-notch in the limited time I spent with the phone. We’ll leave the verdict on the Flip 6 for our review.
