The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) plans to submit a plan to the government this month to support the local medical device sector, part of an effort to help auto parts makers diversify into the industry.

The changes in the industry could help auto parts makers that are familiar with combustion engines and need to adapt their operations to the automotive industry’s transition to electric vehicle (EV) technology.

“FTI members are in discussions on a plan to help component manufacturers who want to transform their businesses and enter the medical device industry,” said Isares Rattanadilok Na Phuket, vice chairman of FTI.

The cluster, operating under FTI Mobility-ONE, a new unit of the federation, believes that auto parts manufacturers can move into the production of medical products, including single-use devices such as test kits for diagnosing diseases, as well as durable items such as wheelchairs and hospital beds.

The cluster, known as CFM-ONE, was established last year to support the development of the Thai automotive industry and help companies that produce cars and auto parts cope with the challenges posed by the sector.

“CFM-ONE will discuss with the government a plan to better promote the medical equipment industry, with the aim of introducing new, popular products to the country’s market,” Mr Isares said.

FTI wants state public health agencies to buy more locally produced medical equipment that is not widely available in hospitals.

It is difficult to sell medical products to hospitals and health and wellness facilities that do not trust products manufactured by local companies, he added.

Thailand imports about 90% of its medical equipment and uses domestic products for the remaining 10%.

“Thailand needs to develop its own medical products and also improve technologies to support the local medical equipment industry,” Mr Isares said.

CFM-ONE previously said it would work with global automakers to help local auto parts makers looking to stay in the automotive industry by transitioning to producing parts for electric vehicles.
