Hydrogen process trials begin on floating platform off Wales

Earlier this month, ERM began offshore trials off south-west Wales, UK, to test elements of its Dolphyn Hydrogen process.

Tests are being conducted in a floating marine environment at Pembroke Harbour.

The process combines electrolysis, desalination and hydrogen production on a floating wind platform. The hydrogen produced is sent to shore via pipeline for use in power generation, transport, industrial applications and heating.

No connection to the electricity grid is required and the process paves the way for low-carbon energy generation without grid constraints and without the need to consume energy from other renewable energy sources.

The development is supported by the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. More than £8 million ($10.3 million) of funding has been secured to date.

To support the ongoing implementation, the ERM team implemented a digital twin using the company’s emission.AI SaaS software to help operations teams optimize the energy efficiency of their facilities and minimize emissions.
