Xiaomi’s 10-Year India Journey: 10 Things You Need to Know

Xiaomi launched the Redmi 13 5G and celebrated its 10th anniversary in India on Tuesday at an event in Bengaluru. Gadgets 360 was present at the event, and it was a big one. Apart from unveiling the Redmi 13 5G, the brand also launched the Redmi Buds 5C, two new power banks, and the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum Cleaner X10. But that’s not all; the company also unveiled its first electric car – the Xiaomi SU7 Max – at the event. Unfortunately, the car won’t be making its way to India, at least for the next three years.

Xiaomi has achieved a lot in a decade. Here are some of the notable achievements and future plans that Xiaomi India CEO Muralikrishnan B spoke about during a roundtable that Gadgets 360 attended ahead of the launch event.

Flagship Phone Under 15,000 Rupees

The Chinese manufacturer entered the Indian market in 2014 with the launch of the Mi 3, a flagship phone powered by the Snapdragon 800 chipset that cost just Rs 14,999. The phone had a 5-inch display and ran on Android 4.4 based on MIUI 5.0. It was equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel selfie camera, and a 3,050 mAh battery.

GDP doubled in 10 years

Xiaomi’s GDP in India has doubled in the last 10 years

Xiaomi CEO Muralikrishnan says the company’s GDP has more than doubled over the past 10 years, from about $2.04 trillion in 2014 to about $3.94 trillion in 2024. The company expects to hit $4 trillion by the end of the year.

250 million smartphones shipped

Muralikrishnan claims that in the last 10 years, since the launch of Xiaomi Mi 3, the company has sold around 250 million units in India, or around 250 million devices.

350 million devices delivered

Overall, Xiaomi has sold over 350 million devices in India since 2014. This includes smartphones, tablets, IoT devices, smart TVs and all other products that Xiaomi sells in the country.

Vision of the Future of AI

While most smartphone makers equip their flagship devices with artificial intelligence (AI) features, Xiaomi believes that AI should be the foundation on which useful smartphone features are built.

AI should be treated as a foundational layer, says Muralikrishnan

Muralikrishnan said the company is working on several use cases. However, we didn’t get any details on what those features might be or when we can expect them.

Focus on performance and experience

In the coming years, Xiaomi will focus not only on performance but also on the experience offered to customers in all upcoming products. It will do this by continuing to invest in R&D and self-developed core technologies.

Relationships and partnerships

Muralikrishnan also spoke about adding more manufacturing partners in India to strengthen the Make in India initiative. Xiaomi will continue to add more AIoT products to its list. It also wants to improve relationships with channel partners both offline and online, while expanding its offline reach.

Increasing the share of locally sourced raw materials in production

Xiaomi has said it intends to increase local sourcing of non-semiconductor BOMs (bill of materials) in its smartphones. The BOM for locally sourced materials is currently 35 percent, according to Muralikrishnan, but the company wants to reach 55 percent in the next two years.

India’s Largest Connected Ecosystem

The company aims to become the largest connected ecosystem in India in the coming years by running HyperOS software across all devices.

Achieve carbon neutrality by 2040

Xiaomi India will also work on several initiatives to make this happen

Muralikrishnan said Xiaomi aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. It will also continue to use technology to make an impact on society through initiatives like the recently announced breast cancer screening program in partnership with the Yuvraj Singh Foundation.

70 million devices to be shipped in the coming decade

Xiaomi India’s Muralikrishnan concluded his opening speech at the roundtable by saying the company aims to sell 700 million devices, or Rs 700 crore, in the country in the next 10 years.
