Samsung aims to compete with Apple Vision Pro by launching XR headset by end of 2024, confirms TM Roh CEO

Samsung plans to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro by launching a mixed reality headset known as the XR Headset later this year. Samsung’s mobile division president TM Roh confirmed the news in his closing keynote at the Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, France on Wednesday. In addition to the news, Samsung also announced the Galaxy Z series foldable devices, the Galaxy Buds 3 series wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra, and the Galaxy Ring.

Google Platforms and Devices senior vice president Rick Osterloh shared the stage with Samsung executives and said that an “XR platform” with Samsung is in the works. Osterloh said, “Looking forward, we are working together to bring next-generation experiences to Galaxy products, from smartphones and wearables to future technologies like the upcoming XR platform, which we’ve been working closely on with Samsung and Qualcomm.”

What can we expect from the Samsung XR headset and when can we expect to get our hands on it?

Samsung has reportedly ordered a higher-resolution display for its mixed reality headset, aiming to match the 4K-per-eye resolution offered by a similar Apple device. Furthermore, after postponing the launch to the end of 2024, Samsung has set a production goal of 30,000 units for the current year.

During his closing remarks at the event, TM Roh, president of Samsung’s mobile business, discussed the upcoming mixed reality platform. He stated, “The new XR platform will be launched this year.” While Roh did not provide a specific timeline for the launch of Samsung’s mixed reality headset, his comments indicated that the product is likely in the final stages of development. This suggests that Samsung is making significant progress toward entering the competitive mixed reality market, which is in line with its strategic goals.
