Construction drives growth as services sector shows weakness

A jump in construction activity has seen growth continue in the first three months of the year, overcoming weakness in the rest of the economy. Statistics New Zealand said on Thursday that the economy grew by 0.6 per cent in the first three months of the year, the same pace as in the final months of 2018. Growth at the start of the year was boosted by construction, helped by stable, settled weather. Construction as an industry grew by 3.7 per cent in the March quarter, after a 2.2 per cent expansion at the end of 2018.
