Job interview leads to panic-like situation in Ankleshwar, Gujarat

The Opposition, reporting on a video posted online resembling a stampede in Gujarat’s Bharuch district where over 800 people had turned up for an interview conducted by a company for 40 vacancies, has renewed its attack on the government over the high unemployment rate in the country.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, posting a video on X portal, said that “the disease of unemployment has become an epidemic in India and the BJP-ruled states have become the epicentre of this disease”.

The footage shows candidates jostling each other on a narrow ledge to enter the interview area, before the ramp railing on which the candidates were standing collapsed under their collective weight.

In a Hindi post, Mr Gandhi said India’s “future” of waiting in queues for ordinary jobs is the reality of Narendra Modi’s “Amrit Kaal”.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hit out at the BJP. “This video is proof of the ‘model of deception’ that the BJP has been following on the people of Gujarat for the last 22 years. This video is also a clear proof of how the Modi government has been snatching jobs from the youth and destroying their future for the last 10 years,” he said in a Hindi post on X.

“The BJP’s promise to provide two million jobs every year — document leakage, recruitment corruption, education mafia, keeping government jobs vacant for years, deliberately not filling SC/ST/OBC/EWS posts, contract-based recruitment by introducing schemes like Agniveer and leaving millions of youths wandering from door to door — has fallen victim to all this!” Mr Kharge said.

Samajwadi president Akhilesh Yadav said the video exposed the “truth” about the “false development” model in Gujarat. He blamed the government’s policies for the high unemployment rate. The youth, he said, would topple the BJP government because as long as the BJP exists, there is no hope for them.

Trinamool Congress from its official X account posted a video and said, “This is the reality of the much-vaunted ‘Gujarat model’. This is the legacy of PM @narendramodi – record unemployment, desperation and chaos!”

Responding to reporters’ questions in a video, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “He is imparting knowledge about ‘vikas’ to everyone, but is unable to provide employment to the people of Gujarat,” he said.
