Russian troops reportedly regrouped in the Kharkov sector

Russian troops are regrouping in the Kharkov sector and preparing troops to attack the city of Vovchansk, said Colonel Vitaly Sarantsev, spokesman for the Ukrainian Kharkov Operational-Tactical Group.

In a Telegram announcement, Ukraine’s Kharkov Operational-Tactical Group said Russia was training “assault groups of the 138th Independent Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 6th Army and the 153rd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 47th Motorized Rifle Division” for the Vovichansk offensive.

The Kyiv Post reported on July 1 that the battle of Vovchansk, the main point of Russia’s offensive in Kharkiv in May, had been largely held back by Ukrainian forces, one of the few times Russian forces have not had an overwhelming firepower advantage since the 2022 invasion.

However, Sarantsev told state television on Sunday, July 14, the situation in the region remains difficult and Russian troops, despite heavy losses, continue their efforts to advance.

“The situation is quite difficult now, the Russian occupiers (have not stopped) trying to dislodge our defenders from their positions, they are regrouping. In the area of the Morokhovets and Krasne settlements, to continue the assault, the enemy is transferring personnel to the area of the Hlyboke settlement,” Sarantsev said.

The Kharkov Operational Tactical Group of Ukraine said in a statement posted on Telegram that Russia had transferred personnel from the assault groups of the 155th Independent Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet and the 18th Motorized Rifle Division of the 11th Army Corps to Glyboki.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), citing a social media post by a Russian milblogger, reported in its July 14 update that “the Russian Northern Group of Forces (GoF), which is responsible for the offensive towards Kharkov, has only between 30,000 and 70,000 troops,” which the milblogger said is insufficient to break through the 40-kilometer-long Ukrainian defense.

The Ukrainian Kharkov Operational and Tactical Group reported that Russia’s losses in the Kharkov region on July 14 amounted to 120 servicemen and 77 units of various equipment, including four armored fighting vehicles and five artillery systems.

On July 12, the British Ministry of Defence announced in its daily report that average Russian losses on the front in May and June amounted to 1,262 and 1,163 soldiers per day, respectively, and that total losses would probably exceed 70,000 soldiers over the two months.
