iOS 18 Photos App Will Restore Lost and Corrupted Photos; Apple Releases iOS 18 Public Beta 1

A new feature in the Photos app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia will help users repair and recover lost and corrupted photos and videos. The “Recovered” album in the Photos app appears in the App Utilities section of builds of the operating system. You’ll see it if your device has photos and videos that aren’t part of the Photos app. The “Recovered” album, if it appears in the Photos app, can be used to permanently delete or restore images and videos saved in the album.
There are reasons why photos and videos can get lost. One is a data corruption issue similar to the one that caused deleted photos to be returned to the Photos app earlier this year. Or some images may simply not be saved properly to your Photos library. Third-party apps with permissions to access and manage your Photos library can also cause photos to get lost or corrupted.

The “Recovered” album will appear in the Photos app if and only if there are corrupted or lost photos or videos on your iPhone. You can check this by following these steps:

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Scroll down and find “Tools.”
  3. Click “Recovered” and confirm your identity using Face ID or Touch ID.
  4. Click on the photo or video and select “Permanently Delete” or “Restore to Library.”
When you update to iOS 18, ‌iPadOS 18‌, or ‌macOS Sequoia‌, your device will automatically scan for corrupted or lost images or videos that could be recovered. Again, if there are no lost or corrupted images or videos on your device, you won’t see a “Recovered” album on your phone. The new feature should prevent a previous issue where previously deleted images would start reappearing in the Photos app.
Apple today released iOS18 Public Beta 1, which is essentially the same version as iOS Developer Beta 3. Typically, Developer Beta is released first, and Apple goes through feedback from developers looking for big issues to fix before releasing the next Public Beta. If you want to be the first on your block with new features and curse bugs, go for the Developers Blog. If you prefer to wait to see if developers find any major issues that get patched before installing iOS Beta 18, go for Public Beta 1.

To install iOS18 developer beta 3 or iOS18 beta, go to Settings > General > Software update. At the top of the screen, tap Beta Updates and select the option you want from Off (None) iOS18 betas will appear), iOS18 Beta version for developers or iOS18 Public Beta. Again, from this point on, Developer Beta and Public Beta will be the same, with the only difference being that Developer Beta will come out a little earlier.

Once you have made your selection, click the Back button in the top left corner and you will see an invitation to install iOS18 beta version of your choice. Follow the instructions to install it on your phone. Before installing the beta version, make sure you have recently backed up your phone to iCloud.
