Although the U.S. and Mexican governments are joining forces to crack down on imports of steel products that enter the U.S. market through Mexico, the estimated impact on Asian steel exporters such as China, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and Taiwan could be quite limited, as only 13% of all steel exported from Mexico to the U.S. was not melted and poured in Mexico.

As for Taiwan, in 2023, Taiwan exported about 293,000 tons of steel products to Mexico, 40,000 tons more than in the previous year, 2022. In the first half of this year, Taiwan exported a total of 119,000 tons of steel products to Mexico, so the annual export is expected to reach about 237,000 tons, which will be less than the previous year’s volume. Therefore, Taiwan is expected to feel only a minor impact from the recent restrictions.
