Tata Group signs Rs 27,000 crore deal for semiconductor plant in Assam: Report

The Assam government has taken a significant step towards setting up a semiconductor plant in Assam’s Morigaon district. The state government has signed an agreement with the Tata Group, granting India’s largest conglomerate a long-term lease on a large land parcel of over 170 acres, reports an ET report. The new semiconductor manufacturing plant is to be set up at the site of an old paper mill in Morigaon. The project, being undertaken by a subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Tata, involves a significant investment of around Rs 27,000 crore.

The agreement between Tata Group and the Assam government, signed for a period of six decades, was officially finalised by representatives of both parties.

The agreement is expected to accelerate the development of semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the region, as well as create jobs and support technological development in the northeastern state of Assam.

A senior executive from Tata Group signed on behalf of the company, while the state’s interests were represented by a technical manager and project manager from Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC), the ET report added.

The initiative is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the Indian semiconductor industry. The central government has given approval to set up three such facilities across the country. Construction on all three projects is expected to begin within a few months.

According to the state chief minister, the Assam plant is expected to start production by 2025. Apart from production, the project will also include a dedicated skill development centre. The centre aims to provide training to local youth, especially from the north-eastern region, in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor technology and electronics.

The chief minister also noted that a group of 1,500 people from Assam, mostly women, are currently undergoing specialist training at centres in southern India, with the aim of preparing them for leadership roles once the new plant becomes operational.

The Prime Minister recently attended a virtual ceremony to mark the official launch of the project. The development marks a major step in Assam’s industrial development and India’s drive towards self-sufficiency in high-tech manufacturing.
