Avangrid produces first energy at True North solar project in Texas

Avangrid, Inc., a sustainable energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, announced that it has begun producing energy from its True North solar plant in Falls County, Texas, near Waco.

With 20 MW now operational, this is another important milestone for what will become the largest solar project in Avangrid’s portfolio and the first of its kind in Texas.

“This is great news, not only for the timely construction of True North, but for the entire state of Texas. Thanks to the diligent work of our team and our contractors, we are able to deliver additional power to the Texas grid as the summer months approach,” said Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid. “I am pleased to see this project moving forward as Avangrid continues its mission to accelerate the transition to clean energy across America.”

True North will be a 238 MWac (321 MWdc) solar farm. Once constructed, the project will provide clean, renewable energy to support Meta’s net-zero emissions commitment, including running its upcoming data center in neighboring Temple, its second data center in Texas, on 100% renewable energy. The project will provide power to customers on the Texas grid before commercial operations begin in late 2024.

The project will create local jobs and support local communities during construction and operation. It is expected to pay more than $40 million in property taxes over the life of the project, which directly supports public services such as safety and fire protection, as well as local schools.

Avangrid has successfully developed, constructed and operated renewable energy facilities in Texas for over 15 years, with installed wind capacity exceeding 1,200 MW. The company has paid over $100 million in property taxes from existing facilities.
