A Practical Look at Apple’s iOS 18/macOS 15 Solution

One of the most important features in iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, iPadOS 18, and visionOS 2 is the all-new Passwords app. When Apple finally releases these software updates in the fall, the company will finally move Passwords from a hidden subsection in Settings to its own standalone app.

After years of users asking for the passwords section to become a separate app, Apple has finally listened to their requests and made sure to add almost everything users would expect from software of this type.

To access the Passwords app on iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, etc., users need to authenticate using your password or Face ID. For an extra layer of protection, iOS 18 lets you lock and hide apps that can only be accessed via biometric authentication.

When you launch the app, you will see six different tabs:

  • All Passwords
  • Access keys
  • Codes
  • Wifi
  • Security
  • Removed

In addition, if you have sharing passwords with family members, they will also appear there. This is very useful for sharing streaming service codes, for example. I also like that Auto-complete works in Safari and other browsers thanks iCloud extensionso you don’t have to keep coming back to this app. Apple users who also have a Windows computer can also use the Passwords app.

It’s possible share passwords. Apple will let you know if you’re reusing a passcode and suggest strong passwords so you can always keep your data safe. Other than that, the app is very basic and doesn’t have many features.

The Passwords app in iOS 18 is a step in the right direction, but it’s a shame this feature isn’t there

While I applaud Apple for trying to create a standalone Passwords app, there’s a small feature I hope the company includes in a future release: the ability to store credit card information. Right now, you can’t store a credit card in the app, which is a shame.

Given the level of protection it offers, I’d love to have my virtual card stored away so I can make purchases without any hassle when Apple Pay isn’t an option. However, since users keep asking for this feature, I’m pretty sure Apple won’t wait long to implement this new tab in the app.

Below, you can learn more about iOS 18, which is scheduled to launch in late fall.
