T-Mobile plans to take over Metronet

It looks like T-Mobile isn’t done with its buying spree this year. After acquiring Mint Mobile (and its brands) and most of US Cellular, there’s another brand the Un-carrier has its eyes on.

According to PhoneArenaT-Mobile is considering buying Metronet, a fiber-optic internet service provider (ISP), through a joint venture with KKR. The report said the two companies would have “equal share in Metronet” if the takeover goes through.

As of this writing, Metronet is the largest privately held fiber optic company in the U.S. It currently serves 2 million customers in over 300 communities in 17 states. Some markets are getting speeds up to 5GB, but it is expanding its presence in others.

In order to remain competitive in the market, Metronet has also expressed interest in offering mobile services. In this way, the partnership with T-Mobile would allow it to achieve its goal. On the other hand, T-Mobile would be able to meet the demand for broadband internet access. The un-carrier will also be able to offer fiber connection, as it is still a faster solution than 5G home internet. With the acquisition of Lumos, T-Mobile will be better prepared to expand its fiber service to more markets.
