Fugro continues wind research in New York Bay

Community Offshore Wind, a joint venture between RWE and National Grid Ventures, has commissioned Fugro to conduct geotechnical investigations on its offshore lease in New York Bay.

They plan to develop the area with 3 GW of offshore wind energy.

Last year, Fugro conducted a site characterisation analysis across the 510 sq km lease area and potential export cable corridors, providing a preliminary ground model of geophysical and environmental conditions to support the conceptual design.

New geotechnical studies will update this model by taking samples from the seabed and testing ground conditions, which will facilitate the design of wind turbine foundations.

The work is being carried out using two vessels: one is used for seabed sampling and in situ testing in drill holes, while the other is used for seabed cone penetration testing.

In the second case, Fugro is implementing its SEACALF MkV Deep Drive system, which is said to enable rapid data collection and provide up to 40% lower emissions than other technologies.

VirGeo, the company’s cloud-based surveying applicationThe data analytics platform enables near real-time data analysis, which Fugro added helps optimize field operations.
