Friday’s Laggard Sectors: Technology & Communications, Materials

Looking at the worst-performing sectors as of midday on Friday, technology and communication stocks are underperforming other sectors, posting a loss of 1.2%. Within the sector, CrowdStrike Holdings Inc (ticker: CRWD) and Intel Corp (ticker: INTC) are two big stocks that are lagging, posting losses of 11.7% and 5.1%, respectively. Among the technology ETFs, one ETF tracking the sector is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (ticker: XLK), which is down 1.4% on the day and is up 15.31% year to date. Meanwhile, CrowdStrike Holdings Inc is up 18.62% year to date, and Intel Corp is down 33.64% year to date. Combined, CRWD and INTC make up about 2.2% of XLK’s underlying holdings.

The next worst-performing sector is Materials, down 1.1%. Among the large materials stocks, the most notable are PPG Industries Inc (ticker: PPG) and FMC Corp. (ticker: FMC), down 3.6% and 3.3%, respectively. One ETF that closely tracks materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLB), which was down 1.0% at midday and up 6.14% year over year. Meanwhile, PPG Industries Inc is down 14.24% year over year, and FMC Corp. is down 6.23% year over year. Combined, PPG and FMC make up about 3.6% of XLB’s underlying holdings.
