Samsung Boosts AI Capabilities with Oxford Semantic Technologies Acquisition

Samsung Electronics has acquired Oxford Semantic Technologies, a University of Oxford spin-off specializing in knowledge graph technology, for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 2017 by three University of Oxford professors, OST specializes in knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR), a field of artificial intelligence representing logical and knowledge-based approaches.

Unlike machine learning, which finds patterns in massive data sets and generates statistical results, KRR enables AI to draw accurate and correct conclusions and make logical and explainable decisions based on data combined with expert knowledge.

The acquisition will see OST’s knowledge graphing and reasoning software, RDFox, combined with Samsung’s AI technology and implemented across all of the company’s products, from mobile devices to TVs and home appliances.

Samsung wants to develop artificial intelligence capabilities in devices

The two companies have been collaborating on multiple projects since 2018, and with this acquisition, Samsung will secure advanced core engines for personal knowledge graphs.

These graphs integrate information and context distributed across services and apps, tailoring the device experience to user preferences and usage patterns.

Combined with AI technology built into the device, such as in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series, the goal is to create a hyper-personalized user experience while keeping sensitive personal data stored on the device secure.

OST already has customers in the financial, manufacturing and e-commerce sectors in Europe and North America. In financial services, its technology is used to make complex decisions autonomously and track financial crimes.

In other industries, such as manufacturing and retail, it enables engineers and designers to quickly assess product and part compliance, allowing them to provide immediate recommendations to customers.

RDFox is also used for intelligent diagnostics in healthcare and for decision-making in autonomous cars.
