8.5 million Windows devices paralyzed

JAKARTA Millions of Windows devices were unable to operate on July 19 due to a blue screen of death (BSOD). The situation paralyzed operations in the banking and aviation sectors. The problem is caused by an update from CrowdStrice, a cybersecurity software provider. Microsoft reports that 8.5 million devices were affected. Although this number may seem large, it represents only one percent of the Windows machines in operation. “While the percentage is small, the broad economic and social impact reflects the use of CrowdStrice by companies that provide many essential services,” said David Weston, Vice President of Corporate Security and Operating System at Microsoft. In light of the issue, Weston explained that the priority must be to operate and apply a secure technology ecosystem. In addition, cooperation between software platforms and security providers is essential to addressing this issue.

When the BSOD suddenly hit Windows, Microsoft immediately partnered with CrowdStrice to automate their work on developing solutions. Improvements to the issue have been published on the Windows Aircraft Center. Microsoft has also been working with various cloud provider services, such as Google Cloud Platforms and Amazon Web Services (AWS), to monitor the impact across the industry. Additionally, Microsoft continues to publish its latest status on the Azure Status Dashboard. “While this is not a Microsoft incident, given that it impacts our ecosystem, we want to provide an update on the steps we’ve taken with CrowdStrice and others to fix and support our customers,” Weston explained.
