Shaping a dengue-free future for the next generation

The Japanese word kirei, which embodies the concepts of health, beauty and purity, has been associated with Kao Corporation for decades. While some may think it applies solely to the company’s personal, home and wellness product lines, kirei also guides the company’s ESG (environmental, social and governance) direction, said Dave Muenz, director and managing director of ESG at Kao Corporation.

“For Kao, the kirei world is one where all life exists in harmony,” he said. “Our goal is to support everyone on their journey to achieve the kirei lifestyle through our products and contributions, benefiting both people and the planet.”

STRENGTHENING KIREI THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS

To achieve its vision of a kirei lifestyle, Kao is constantly developing new products that enhance well-being and implementing more sustainable practices across its operations. The organization is also refining its ESG strategy to redefine corporate responsibility and help consumers adopt sustainable lifestyles.

“We started thinking about how we could empower people and create a multiplier effect in communities,” Mr. Muenz said. “Being present in the community comes with a responsibility, like improving public health and making sure we leave things better than we found them.”

One result of this ESG-driven engagement is Kao’s contribution to Thailand’s fight against mosquito-borne infectious diseases such as dengue fever through projects such as the GUARD OUR FUTURE initiative in Southeast Asia.

Dengue fever is a characteristic symptom, often accompanied by skin rashes, nausea, vomiting, mild bleeding from the nose or gums, and body aches. Confirming a diagnosis of dengue fever usually requires a visit to a doctor and a blood test. In some cases, the infection can lead to serious complications and even death.

The number of cases of dengue fever in Thailand, which is endemic in the region, rose sharply in 2024 compared to last year, reaching 26,623 as of June 26. To combat dengue fever, Kao is working with government agencies, industry stakeholders and academic institutions in the country.
