Clean Energy Begins Construction of RNG Facility at South Fork Dairy

Construction has begun on Clean Energy Fuels’ renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility at South Fork Dairy in Dimmitt, Texas, USA.

South Fork Dairy has a herd of 16,000 cows.

Once operational, the new RNG facility will be one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. with an annual production capacity of approximately 2.6 million gallons of RNG.

This sustainable transportation fuel, produced from organic waste, will be incorporated into the network of Clean Energy gas stations across the country.

The estimated cost of building the bioreactors and processing plant is approximately $85 million, with completion scheduled for 2025.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, agriculture is responsible for nearly 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

Producing RNG by capturing methane from agricultural waste can significantly reduce methane emissions.

The California Air Resources Board has deemed RNG from dairy farms to be exceptionally clean, giving it an average carbon intensity score of -330, which is significantly lower than that of electric vehicles charged on the current electricity grid.

Clean Energy Senior Vice President of Renewables Clay Corbus: “Building anaerobic reactors on a large dairy (farm) like South Fork will help dairy owner Frank Brand and his team collect and monetize significant amounts of manure waste while also taking advantage of the environmental credits the RNG facility provides.”

Brand added: “Not only does this project help us transform waste into clean, usable and sustainable fuel, it also helps us manage manure, which is no small feat for a dairy our size.

“We’re doing this while reducing our carbon footprint – something I hope many other dairies will want to follow.”
