What people on Channel X are saying about Seattle Mariners trading Randy Arozarena

Armed with an anemic offense that boasts the worst batting average in all of baseball, the Seattle Mariners made a major trade move Thursday night, acquiring power forward Randy Arozarena from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for prospects Aidan Smith, Brody Hopkins and an unnamed player.

Arozarena will immediately slot into the middle of Seattle’s summer roster and will team up with Julio Rodriguez (when healthy) to form a dynamic group of outfielders. Arozarena also has two years left on his contract after 2024, meaning he’ll help Seattle in both the short and medium term.

Here’s what notable Mariners players and baseball figures in general had to say now that the deal has become official.

According to @JayHayKid from the “Baseball is Dead” podcast:

Randy Arozarena has a 110 wRC+ this season, which is the *worst* mark of his career.

This is also currently the *best* wRC+ of any Mariners player (min. 100 PA).

According to Jordan Shusterman of @CespedesBBQ:

another great example of Southeast Asian trade with surprising depth that quickly turned into an extremely attractive trading lure

now the point is that takeovers actually help, because that’s what it’s all about (and so far it hasn’t happened)

but the process is still impressive

According to @MarinerMuse:

Is Randy Arozarena, based on his accomplishments throughout his career and where he is now, the best MLB player Jerry Dipoto has ever acquired?

According to @TalkinJake of Jomboy Media:

The Mariners needed a hit
The Mariners have gained a player
Mariners traded for minor league prospects most of you haven’t heard of before

Good job, Mariners*

*note, a trade with the Rays is always scary and I expect both MiLB players to become stars

The Mariners will return to action Friday night when they visit the Chicago White Sox at 5:05 p.m. PT. It is not yet known if Arozarena will be in the lineup.
