SHOWCASE GOLF: Coleman, Johnson champions day one


COEUR d’ALENE — Former Major League Baseball player Vince Coleman leads with 33 net points after the first day of the 10th annual Golf Showcase at The Coeur d’Alene Resort on Friday.

Coleman, who won the Celeb-Am last year, won the team title with his Cure Believers team, scoring 82 points after the first day, along with Jeanie Wolff, Rita Case and former Post Falls High golf coach Maria Kostina.

This year, the stars will play 36 holes with their corporate sponsors, with the second round starting at 9 a.m. today.

Second team with 80 points was the Worthy Foundation, featuring former NFL quarterbacks Brock Osweiler, John Caudill, Jordan Caudill and Rod Burke.

The tournament uses a modified Stableford scoring system, with a team champion determined each day.

NHL star and former Spokane Chief and Coeur d’Alene Lakers player Tyler Johnson was the leading net scorer with 30 points, followed closely by Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper with 28 points.

Long shot champion Kyle Berkshire, professional golfer Blair O’Neal and Super Bowl XXVI champion and former Washington State quarterback Mark Rypien are tied for second overall with 22 points each.

The tournament will conclude today at The Coeur d’Alene Resort golf course.
