Description

We are looking for dedicated and passionate interns to join our translation team in fall 2024!

We are InReach, a trans-led nonprofit building the world’s first open source platform connecting LGBTQ+ people experiencing persecution or discrimination with safe, verified resources. Our Translation Proofreader interns help improve the language accessibility of our free platform.

InReach uses a combination of crowdsourced and machine translations for translations. Unlike most sites that rely solely on machine translation (e.g. Google Translate), Crowdin lets real people review (and edit if necessary) machine-generated translations to ensure accuracy, cultural competence, and inclusivity.

For fall 2024, knowledge of the following languages ​​is required: Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Tagalog and Ukrainian.

Internship Schedule and Compensation

  • Internship dates fall 2024: Monday, August 26 – Friday, December 6, 2024
  • Required number of hours per week: 10 hours (*interns can self-select their hours – Monday through Friday – depending on their schedule/time zone; all interns will log their hours in the InReach volunteer management system for billing purposes)
  • Please note: This is a remote and unpaid internship. InReach staff are happy to submit forms on behalf of interns who would like to receive credit from their universities for this internship. Please indicate in your application what forms your university requires.

Duties

  • Please contact our Resource Coordinator.
  • Complete a comprehensive virtual training program designed to enhance trainees’ understanding of global and national LGBTQ+ rights, LGBTQ+ terminology, intersex within the diverse LGBTQ+ community, and the double marginalization of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and other LGBTQ+ people experiencing persecution.
  • Use Crowdan independent translation system that allows you to translate texts from English into a second language.
  • Proofreading of translations done by other volunteer translators, contract translators or freelance translators.
  • “Accept” or “reject” Crowdin machine and human translations. Translations you “accept” will appear on the InReach platform.
  • Provide useful feedback to other volunteer translators as needed.
  • Please contact the InReach translation team via Discord if you have any questions regarding translation.
  • Additional ad hoc translation tasks (as needed).

Qualifications

  • Has obtained or is in the process of obtaining a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
  • Knowledge of English and at least one of the following languages: Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Tagalog, Ukrainian.
  • Willingness and ability to write in English and a second language that incorporates gender diversity (e.g., e/x in Spanish vs. a/o; folx vs. men and women in English).
  • Willingness and ability to learn how to use Crowdin and Discord.
  • Passionate about linguistic justice, refugee justice, and LGBTQ+ rights.
  • Availability of at least 10 hours per week (Monday to Friday).
  • Knowledge of online communication tools (e.g. G Suite, Discord, Zoom).
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently in a remote environment.
