Channel 4 is set to launch a new show inspired by celebrity knitters including Tom Daley, Lorde, Ryan Gosling and Nicholas Hoult.

Game Of Wool will see “10 aspiring knitters take on a series of complex challenges for the chance to win a ‘money can’t buy’ prize and become the UK’s first ever TV Knitting Champion.” Fashion industry veterans Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell, known for their work with Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith and NIKE, will judge the entries.

Filmed against the backdrop of rural Scotland, the show will challenge contestants to take on two tasks per week, as reported by Bang Showbiz. They are announced to be: “‘The Big Knit’, where they will work in teams on an incredibly complex project, and ‘The Wee Knit’, where they will take on individual tasks that will really test their abilities, skill levels and whether they can tell the difference between Fair Aisle and Intarsia.”

Clemency Green, Senior Commissioning Editor, expressed her excitement, saying: “I am thrilled to be commissioning this exciting format from More4 and can’t wait to see the amazing work our knitters create. My main hope is that The Game of Wool encourages people, young and old, to pick up their knitting needles and experience the joy that knitting and creating can bring.”

Jo Street, Head of Lifestyle at Channel 4, also shared her enthusiasm, stating: “I’m delighted to commission Hello Halo to produce The Game of Wool for More 4. As a Glasgow-based production company, they produce a programme deeply rooted in the Scottish countryside and its historical influence, so Hello Halo couldn’t be a more ideal independent programme to work with. I really hope that the fact that knitting is so popular with the ‘knit-tok’ generation means that our programme will find an enthusiastic audience both within and outside the crafting community, bringing this wholesome activity to a wider audience who will be able to watch and stream the series on Channel 4.”

While executive producer Wendy Rattray commented: “This is knitting, but not as you know it. Expect a rainbow extravaganza set in the Scottish countryside, where brilliant knitters, young and old, will create the most unexpected and stunning knits: homewares, jewellery, sculptures, shoes, furniture… and more. Wool is officially cool and we’re delighted to present the best of the best in this exciting new format.”

Helen Greatorex, Head of Format Acquisitions, Banijay Entertainment and Simon Cox, EVP Content & Acquisitions, Banijay Rights, said in a joint statement: “Game of Wool seamlessly complements our existing portfolio of factual entertainment formats, with a wide range of locations. The producers at Banijay Entertainment are excited to bring this charming format locally and we anticipate significant opportunities for the UK version, set in the beautiful Scottish countryside. We have no doubt that this programme will enchant knitting enthusiasts and inspire fans of the competition format with this timeless craft.”
