‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Final Season Premieres in October, Comic-Con Trailer

Paramount+ dropped a teaser trailer for the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks at Comic-Con today, and fans already have a lot to be happy about. The final season of Lower Decks will see the crew of the USS Cerritos working to close “space rifts” — subspace rifts that are wreaking havoc throughout the Alpha Quadrant.

Of course, achieving these goals would be easy enough if the team didn’t have to deal with the Orion War, angry Klingons, disaster after disaster, murder, and their own hopes and dreams.

The teaser debuted as part of a “Star Trek” panel moderated by “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien and featuring cast members Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Jerry O’Connell, as well as executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Mike McMahan.

In the trailer, Mariner is in deep denial about the end of the series — it was announced in January that Season 5 would be the last — and that kind of continued into the panel itself, with Newsome and O’Connell both basically begging for Season 6. We agree, so Paramount+, if you’re watching, etc.

McMahan was more philosophical, promising: “There are some incredible guest stars… and again, just from me personally… we’ve heard you all this time, you’ve kept us going during the pandemic and beyond… I promise you’re going to love it when you see it.”

The commission also announced that the first two episodes of Season 5 will premiere on Thursday, October 24, with subsequent episodes airing every Thursday until the finale on December 19.

Other highlights from the panel include McMahan hinting that while the series finale will “close the chapter,” it won’t be an ending for the show’s ship or crew. It was left unclear whether this means the show might continue in some form, though the panelists referenced Futurama , another acclaimed animated series that was revived — multiple times! — after being canceled by Fox in 2004.

Kurtzman was careful to note that “Futurama” takes place in a different universe, but encouraged fans to show their support for the show and cited how “Star Trek: Prodigy” was saved (the series debuted on Nickelodeon, moved to Paramount+ for a second season, then was canceled again and has since been saved by Netflix).

The series also stars Dawnn Lewis, Fred Tatasciore and Gillian Vigman. “Lower Decks” is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’
animation; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman and McMahan serve as executive producers, along with Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Titmouse, an Emmy Award-winning independent animation production company, serves as the animation studio for the series.

The series was first renewed for a fifth season in March 2023.
