Haryana Chief Minister orders civic officials to investigate flooding in Gurugram

State forest minister and MP from Sohna constituency Sanjay Singh on Saturday directed officials of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to conduct a joint inspection and find out what led to the heavy flooding in residential areas in sectors 55, 56, 57, Sushant Lok 2 and Sushant Lok 3 and submit a report within two days.

The minister, who was addressing a meeting of senior officials of the MCG and GMDA on Saturday, also said that immediate remedial measures should be taken and the situation that took place on Thursday should not be repeated. He also said that action could be taken against the officials if the waterlogging persists.

The minister also asked MCG officials to ensure repair of roads in Sushant Lok 2 and 3.

The meeting of the forest minister came days after the above-mentioned sectors were hit by heavy flooding. Residents said there was three-four feet of water on Sushant Lok roads and water had also entered the ground floor of houses and basements, causing extensive damage.

“Civic agency officials have been asked to inspect the areas where waterlogging has occurred and take immediate remedial measures. They have been asked to take steps to divert water from residential areas to natural streams and storm drains. Steps like cleaning of sewage drains and storm drain networks should be taken up on priority basis, especially in Sushant Lok 2 and 3 on priority basis,” a forest minister official said.

“There was heavy flooding in Blocks A and D of Sushant Lok Phase 3 and Blocks D and F of Sushant Lok Phase 2. In Phase 3, the rainwater drainage system and sewage system are in a very bad condition. Around 600 families in both the areas were affected and the residents of these areas suffered severe damage to their households. The authorities should take immediate action so that such incident does not happen again,” said Pawan Yadav, president of Sushant Lok Phase 3 Residents’ Welfare Association.

On Friday, GMDA said there was heavy waterlogging in sectors 55, 56 and 57 and private areas like Sushant Lok 2 and 3 due to poor condition of storm drains and sewerage network in the area. “The rainwater from these areas did not reach the natural stream or Khost nullah that flows along Southern Peripheral Road. Hence, we have asked the civic body to install more pumps and clean the drainage network to prevent waterlogging,” said Vikram Singh, executive engineer of GMDA.

A senior MCG official, however, said the reason for flooding in the areas on Thursday was overflowing of GMDA drains and three pumps were used to drain the rainwater.
