Engineering students to learn Russian

Vadodara: Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya (BVM) at Vallabh Vidyanagar is all set to launch a Russian language study program in collaboration with a Russian university.
“We already have a state-of-the-art language lab which is equipped with audio-visual gadgets where English and French languages were taught in the past. Now, we are launching the Russian language study program,” said Dr Indrajit N Patel, BVM principal and dean of the international collaboration cell.
“The Ural Federal University“, which is our partner university, is setting up this center to teach the Russian language to our students,” said Patel, adding that learning Russian will open new avenues for higher education for students.
“Currently, North America, Europe, and Australia are the most preferred destinations for Indian students for higher studies. “But we also have cordial relations with Russia, where the Russian universities have started hiring English-speaking professors and students are also offered scholarships, making higher education economically viable,” he said.
“We also have signed MoUs with the Ural State Law University, which is one of the top three universities in Russia, the Moscow (Polytechnic) University, which is a federal state autonomous institution (on the lines of Central Universities in India), and the Unnati Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University, one of the oldest and biggest universities in Russia,” he said.
He said that the recent meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has brought the Indo-Russian relations closer not only in the business and defense sectors but also in the educational and social sectors.
“Ideas were also put forward to deepen the relationship in the cultural sector,” said Patel, who is a founding member of the BRICS Industry Association.
BVM is also a founding member of the BRICS University Association that aims to bring all the universities of the countries on one platform, make educational agreements, and share human and infrastructure resources.
Recently, 14 students from Vallabh Vidyanagar — nine students from BVM and five students from CVM University — participated in the summer university program 2024 at the Ural Federal University. “The students were provided training in robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence apart from industrial visits,” said Patel.
