Seattle Mariners’ New Reliever Creates Fun Team History With His Jersey Number

The Seattle Mariners defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-3 on Saturday afternoon, improving to 55-51 on the year. The win was significant because it helped the M’s keep pace with the Houston Astros in the American League West, and it also marked the first game for the M’s newest signings: Randy Arozarena and Yimi Garcia.

Arozarena, acquired Thursday in a trade, went 1-for-4 with a single, a walk and a run scored. Garcia threw a scoreless inning to earn the hold. He struck out two.

Garcia will be a welcome addition to the M’s as they look to secure their first division championship since 2001, but he is also a welcome addition to the team’s history.

In a fun aside, Garcia is the first player in Mariners history to wear number 93, a fact shared on the @NumbersMLB account.

OF Randy Arozarena (@RandyArozarena) will wear number 56. It was last worn by RHP Penn Murfee in 2023.

RHP Yimi García will wear number 93, a first for the team.

Garcia now has a 2.61 ERA on the season. It was his 11th shutout of the year.

Arozarena has a .212 average, but his numbers have improved significantly since June 1.

The Mariners enter play Sunday with a 1.0 record in the division. They will face the White Sox again on Sunday morning, with first pitch at 11:10 a.m. Pacific Time. Bryce Miller will take the mound against Sox left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet. This could be Crochet’s last start in the organization before he is traded at the deadline.
