Appalachian State’s Aguilar named to Maxwell Award watch list

App State senior quarterback Joey Aguilar has been named to the watch list for the 2024 Maxwell Award, given to the most outstanding player in college football.

Since 2015, App State’s first season as a bowl-eligible FBS program, the Mountaineers have had at least one standout player on the Maxwell Award watch list every year.

Aguilar’s 33 touchdown passes in the 2023 regular season ranked fifth in the nation for the season, which he finished with additional school records of 3,757 yards passing and 4,002 yards of total offense. He is the only returning quarterback in the nation with more than 33 touchdown passes and more than 3,700 yards passing in 2023.

The Maxwell Award has been given to the nation’s top college player of the year since 1937. It is named for Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, a former Swarthmore College standout and renowned sportswriter and football referee.

App State will begin fall practice on Friday and will open its season at home against ETSU on Aug. 31.
