This Gurugram-based site outsmarts scammers, offers help in creating a realistic website

An alleged conversation between a Gurugram-based software engineer and a cybercriminal went viral when he claimed to have turned the tables on the fraudster by offering him website development services. According to an NDTV report, Gaurav Sharan, a cybersecurity analyst, offered to redesign the fraudster’s website for Rs 20,000 after he pointed out that it was instantly recognizable as a fake.

The alleged conversation started after Sharan received a message from a fraudster posing as an HDFC Bank representative. The message asked him to update his PAN number on the bank’s website by opening a link. To which Sharan replied, “Easy to find, it’s a fraud site. I am a software engineer, I can help you redesign the site. For 20k, I will help you redesign it exactly like the HDFC net banking website.”

This apparently interested the scammer, who asked for a sample of the new version of the site via WhatsApp.

Sharan shared his experience in the form of screenshots on social media platform X, with the caption: “Lesson learned: Never mess with a programmer.”

This is not the first such case. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Bengaluru resident Chetty Arun shared the thread in April, along with WhatsApp screenshots, to show an alleged interaction he had with another fraudster.

Screenshots show the scammer opening up to Arun and telling him how he had been involved in scamming people for 10 years. He also explained how APK files were used to take control of the victim’s phone. At the end, the scammer wished Arun good luck.

The thread caught the attention of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who retweeted it with the comment, “You won’t stop until you read the entire thread!”
