City off the grid, rain floods the city, discom says safety is the most important thing

Noida/Ghaziabad: Many residential areas remained without power, in some cases for over three to four hours, following heavy rainfall rain hit the city. Elevators were out of service in many condominiums after basements were flooded with water. Sporadic cases of trees and power poles collapsing were also reported in some areas.

Krishna Tyagi, president of AOA Kendriya Vihar 2 Sector 82, complained of no power as soon as the rain started. KK Jain, president of the RWAs federation, Sector 34, said, “The water has accumulated up to the level where the meters have been installed.”
Dharmendra Sharma, president of RWA Aravalli Apartments, Sector 34, said, “The ACB panels in the society were underwater after the rain. So, we had to switch off the power for another two hours to avoid any accidents.”
Captain VK Kapoor (retired), vice-president of Sector 33 RWA, said the failure of the 33 kV line had affected all the sectors connected to it.
Energy department officials said an electricity pole also collapsed on the balcony of a house in Sector 22, but it was removed immediately.
Some residents have also complained of flooded basements in some apartments in Greater Noida West. Water has entered ground floor houses in sectors 19, 11, 51 and also basements in high-rise buildings in Greater Noida West.
“Power supply was disrupted due to rain which also led to water supply issues in the evening. Roads in Sector 105 were filled with rainwater, drains are in a pathetic condition due to lack of gradient in drains and most importantly, there was no power,” said Deepak Sharma, president of RWA, Sector 105.
PVVNL executive engineer Shivam Tripathi told TOI that preventive shutdowns are usually taken during heavy rains to avoid accidents. Power was restored shortly after 8.30 pm, he added.
A similar situation was witnessed in several parts of Ghaziabad. Pramod Kumar Gupta of Abhay Khand 3 said power was cut for over 2 hours in Apex Suraksha Apartments. Dhirender Garg said there was no power in Siddha Vinayak Module 16 in Indirapuram. Other affected areas included parts of Vaishali, Vasundhara, Loni, Vijay Nagar etc.
Rajesh Kumar, a junior engineer from Ghaziabad power department posted at Abhay Khand 1 in Indirapuram, said, “Flooding of a substation in the area led to power failure. A short circuit was taken as a safety measure and power was restored soon after, after about an hour.”
