City Council approves rules for use of Zink Lake

TULSA, Okla. — Labor Day weekend is approaching, and so is the grand opening of Zink Lake.

On Wednesday night, the Tulsa City Council took a major step toward achieving that goal: it approved rules and regulations governing the use of Zink Lake.

The proposed rules for the lake can be found here.

Jack Seawright told 2 News he has lived in Tulsa for 70 of his 72 years on Earth. He almost always had his eyes on the river and even took part in the first raft race.

“I’d like to do another one,” Seawright said. “I’m getting ready for that, but yeah, I did the first one and the second one; that was a big party.”

Seawright is excited about the lake opening but is concerned about its safety.

“The water will be clear unless there’s heavy rain and runoff. At that time, I would suggest closing it for a week and letting everything flush out of the drains,” Seawright said.

It’s almost as if Seawright wrote the rules. The rules allow the River Parks Authority to set hours of operation and close the lake for safety reasons. In addition, motorboats must be electric. Lake visitors are not allowed to jump into the water from nearby structures.

“I would fish. I would have no problem wading out and catching fish, but when they turn on the water, it gets dangerous,” Seawright said.
The city council gave a guarantee of safety.

Zink Lake will open with great pomp and ceremony on Labor Day weekend.
