Split-screen view lets you place two apps or browser windows side by side on your screen, blocking everything else. If you’re multitasking, this means you can have two windows open at once and not have to open and close each one as you switch between tasks. For example, you can place Excel data on the left side of the screen and write a report on the right. Or you can keep a direct message chat open while participating in a Zoom meeting.

Split-screen view helps you stay on the move without having to constantly search for the right tab. Here’s how to set up Mac split-screen view, swap tabs, and reset the display.

1. Move your cursor to the top of the screen until you see the resize buttons at the top left of each window.

2. Click the red button to close the window or the green button to exit split screen.

3. Don’t panic! Your second window is still open—it’s just hidden in full-screen mode. To access it, press the Mission Control button (F3) on the top row of the keyboard.

4. At the top of the screen, you should see two options: Your desktop and whatever window you had in split screen mode. Click on another window and use the green resize button in the top left corner if you want to exit full screen mode.

If you’re someone (like me) who might need more than two windows open, you can always manually resize the windows to fit three or four on the screen at once. It just won’t be as visually clean as tiled windows.

If you are using an earlier version, you will need to update by clicking Software update button on this screen.
