Logitech Lift for Mac: Quiet Comfort

If a regular Mac mouse like the Magic Mouse is causing your wrist pain, an ergonomic wireless alternative like the Logitech Lift for Mac can help alleviate the discomfort. This Bluetooth mouse positions your hand in a vertical “handshake” position rather than flat and horizontal, which puts less stress on your wrist throughout the day.

But is it any good? And should you buy it instead of one of the best wireless mice for Mac? We tested the Logitech Lift for Mac to see if you should consider it for your Apple setup.

Logitech Lift for Mac: What I Like

The Logitech Lift for Mac design provides a fairly comfortable grip, although it does take some getting used to. However, if you’re looking for an ergonomic mouse, you’ll appreciate the vertical layout that fits perfectly in your hand. It’s also beautifully crafted and feels incredibly solid.

The mouse looks beautiful with its white and gray color scheme and catchy, ribbed back half. I also appreciated the extremely quiet clicks, especially the left and right mouse buttons, which still feel satisfying to use. The sound is so discreet that you can barely hear it in everyday use, and you can’t hear the buttons at all if you’re listening to music.

Most of the mouse buttons can be customized through the Logi Options+ app, including the two side buttons, the middle button (scroll wheel), and the button just behind the wheel. Assigning new functions to the buttons is incredibly easy in the Logitech software, and there are plenty of options available. You can set app-specific controls that only work when a selected app is open, or assign a button to launch Logitech’s ChatGPT-like AI Prompt Builder.

Speaking of buttons and controls, the Lift for Mac scroll wheel uses the SmartWheel technology found in popular Logitech mice like the MX Master 3S. Move it normally and it clicks like any other scroll wheel. Spin it harder and it moves much faster and more smoothly, allowing you to quickly browse long web pages and long documents with minimal effort. It’s a great addition to your mouse.

There’s a button on the bottom for switching between devices. You can connect the mouse to three different devices at once, including those running macOS, iPadOS, and, despite the mouse’s name, Windows. It might be better to put this button on the top of the mouse so you don’t have to keep turning it, but it’s a very useful feature regardless.

Also below that is the access point for the mouse’s battery. It uses a single AA battery, which offers phenomenal battery life and means you never have to plug in a cord and charge the mouse. Logitech claims a single AA battery will last up to two years.

Logitech Lift for Mac: What I Don’t Like

The Logitech Lift for Mac is designed for small to medium-sized hands, and Logitech says you should try the MX Vertical mouse if the Lift for Mac is too small for you. I usually use a claw grip with my mice, but I found that it didn’t quite fit the Lift for Mac. Despite being designed for smaller hands, the Lift for Mac’s design seemed to be designed with a full-palm grip in mind.

Part of that is because the vertical angle makes it difficult to lift the device off the mouse pad if you need to change it. With a regular mouse, you simply squeeze the sides and lift it up. With the Lift for Mac, the position of your hands and the smooth vertical sides of the mouse mean your fingers often slip when you try to lift it. The 131g weight doesn’t help either, which also means it’s not ideal for quick gaming sessions.

Additionally, whenever I used it for more than a few hours, I started to feel a little discomfort in my forearm. This could be because I’ve used standard flat mice my whole life and it takes a while to get used to their vertical counterparts, but it wasn’t exactly encouraging considering that the Lift for Mac is supposed to alleviate wrist pain, not cause it.

Due to the side angle of the mouse, it can be difficult to properly press the scroll wheel and use the middle mouse button. This isn’t helped by the fact that the middle mouse button is a bit spongy (its click isn’t very crisp) and stiff to press, so you often end up accidentally scrolling the wheel instead of pressing the button.

Finally, Logitech Options+ is mostly good, but I really don’t like its method of configuring the mouse pointer speed. Most apps like Options+ use DPI ratings, but the Logitech app chooses a percentage. This makes it very difficult to set the speed to match what you use with other mice (or at least those that use DPI ratings, which is most mice). Even Logitech’s own gaming mice use DPI ratings instead of percentages, since they come with a different app (Logitech G Hub).

Logitech Lift for Mac: The Competition

The Logitech MX Vertical is another option if you’re looking for an ergonomic mouse. It’s slightly larger than the Lift for Mac and uses a top button instead of placing it behind the scroll wheel. It costs $99.99/£109.99. An alternative is the familiar Anker 2.4G Wireless Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse. It uses two AAA batteries and a USB receiver instead of Bluetooth, and at $27.99/£23.99 is a much more affordable option.
