Oura Ring 4 – Everything We Know So Far About The Next-Gen Smart Ring

A recent Oura Ring 4 leak confirms that the Finnish company’s next-generation smart ring is likely on the way, and just in time. The Samsung Galaxy Ring has launched and is already being hailed as the Oura’s biggest competitor to date.

We’ve already seen the release of some interesting new health features on the Oura Gen 3 smart ring to combat Samsung’s offerings — including a stress management tool — and those will surely be standard on the next device, and now it looks like we could see two new styles added to the Gen 4 lineup.

For many, the update seems overdue, but what else can we expect from the company’s next ring, and will it keep the ever-increasing competition for the best Oura Ring alternatives in check? Here’s what we know so far and what to expect from the Oura Ring 4.

Oura Ring Gen 4: When Might It Be Released?

We currently don’t have a specific release date for the Oura Ring 4, but rumors suggest it could arrive before the end of 2024, possibly as early as fall. That would be in line with the previous Gen-3 launch, so you may not have to wait long for the new models to arrive.

According to Android Authority, Oura has submitted two new smart rings for certification (OA11 and OA12), but so far we only have details about the OA11 model. It looks like Oura is testing the ring in gold and sizes 7 to 13.

Android Authority also shared images of the ring design, but at this stage it looks pretty similar to the Gen 3, retaining the round and flat design of the Horizon. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look noticeably slimmer, but we’re not too surprised since smart rings have sensors on the inside, which could increase the ring size slightly.

Still, in our own testing, we found the Oura ring to be significantly more comfortable to wear than the “thinnest” Circular Slim Ring available on the market.

It looks like another model (OA12) may also be in testing and on the way, which could be an upgrade to the Oura Heritage edition. It’s hard to say what to expect at this point.

From the shared test images, it appears that the sensors now appear flush with the inside of the ring, instead of retaining the raised ones used in the Gen-3. The Gen-3 model has three LED sensors on the inside of the ring: an infrared (PPG) sensor to measure heart rate and breathing, an NTC sensor to measure body temperature, and a 3D accelerometer to measure movement. Together, they track sleep, activity, and readiness.

It is recommended to wear the ring with the sensors on the palmar side of the finger closer to the radial artery, and Oura claims a 99.9% reliability score compared to a medical-grade EKG. It will be interesting to see if Oura plans to make improvements or updates to these sensors in the next model, and how they will implement them.

Oura Ring Gen 4: Rumored Features

We can’t go into detail on what features we might find there just yet, but the Oura Ring 4 will likely offer performance improvements based on its hardware and potential additions to its current sleep and stress measurement features.

Given that the Gen-3 offers some of the most accurate and technologically advanced tracking features in a smart ring, it will be interesting to see what the Gen-4 can improve upon. For now, the Gen-3 is still the most versatile ring, especially for period tracking, and its successful partnership with the Natural Cycles fertility app is unmatched.

We’ve also heard that the new Oura Ring update could include food tracking features added to the app. Android Authority took a look at the code for the upcoming version of the app and spotted a new feature that could make tracking your food intake easier.

Two areas that Oura could improve on are reinforcing the outside of the ring, as it scratches quite easily, and improving the battery life. The Gen-3 is advertised as having a 4-7 day battery life, but as our writers who have tested the Gen-3 since its launch report, that drops to around 2-3 days with daily use.

In addition to potentially redesigned sensors and more size options, we could see features like contactless payments, given that Oura has acquired Proxy, a single-signal “digital identity signals” technology.

Oura Gen 4 Ring: Perspectives

The current Oura Gen-3 model costs between $299 and $399 and requires a monthly membership of $5.99 (the first 6 months are free) after purchase. We don’t yet know the price of the Oura Ring 4, but we can estimate that it will sell for a similar starting price of $299 plus a monthly subscription. That’s an important factor considering the Samsung Galaxy Ring costs $399 and is available in sizes 5-13 and doesn’t require a recurring monthly fee.
