SoftBank-backed e-commerce firm Meesho on Friday said it has appointed Jubilant Bhartia Group founder Hari S Bhartia and three other experienced business leaders as independent directors.

Apart from Bhartia, Meesho has hired former JP Morgan chairwoman Kalpana Morparia for South and Southeast Asia, PhonePe non-executive chairman Rohit Bhagat, and San Francisco-based AI firm Ema CEO Surojit Chatterjee.

“As we enter the next phase of growth, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Surojit Chatterjee, Kalpana Morparia, Rohit Bhagat and Hari S. Bhartia as independent directors on the Meesho board,” Meesho founder and CEO Vidit Aatrey said in a statement.

Bhartia is the founder and co-chairman of Jubilant Bhartia Group.

Jubilant Bhartia Group has four major listed companies on Indian stock exchanges with a combined market capitalisation of around $7.65 billion, it added.

Bhartia is also Co-Chairman and Managing Director of Jubilant Pharmova Ltd, and Co-Chairman of Jubilant Ingrevia Ltd and Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd, the master franchisee of Domino’s Pizza and Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in India.

Prior to joining JP Morgan, Morparia worked at ICICI Bank, where she played a key role in raising group capital and the merger of ICICI Ltd with ICICI Bank in 2002.

Bhagat is currently the Non-Executive Chairman of PhonePe, an Independent Director at AssetMark and Lead Independent Trustee of Franklin Templeton ETF Trust.

He previously held management and advisory positions at companies like Axis Bank, Flipkart and FreeCharge.

Chatterjee led Coinbase through its successful initial public offering in 2021 as Chief Product Officer.

Previously at Google, Surojit grew Google Mobile Ads and Google Shopping into billion-dollar businesses as Vice President and Head of Product.

“We are confident that their collective wisdom and diverse perspectives will play a key role in steering the company towards new milestones and sustained success in revolutionising the e-commerce landscape in India,” Aatrey said.

Meesho’s board also includes co-founders Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal; Ashutosh Sharma, head of investments, mergers and acquisitions at Prosus Ventures; Mohit Bhatnagar, managing director at Peak XV Partners; Mukul Arora, co-managing partner at Elevation Capital; and Sarthak Misra, partner at SoftBank Investment Advisers.
