EC opens nominations for 2024 elections | Elections

This year, from 9 to 13 September, the Electoral Commission (EC) will be accepting candidate applications for the elections of the President and Members of Parliament.

This is in accordance with Regulations 6, 7 and 8 of the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (CI 127). The EC has maintained the filing fees for Presidential candidates in 2020 at GH¢100,000 and GH¢10,000 for Parliamentary candidates.

A statement issued in Accra yesterday, signed by the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, said interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the EC website at https://ec.gov.gh/forms.

However, it said that all potential candidates who would like to run in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections as independent candidates should contact the commission to obtain an access code.

“This will allow candidates to download the presidential and parliamentary nomination forms available on the commission’s website,” the release reads.

Presidential candidates

The statement explained that the presidential candidate will be nominated on the commission’s official nomination forms.” Completed presidential nomination forms for each presidential candidate “must be signed by the candidate and not less than two persons who were registered voters of each district assembly,” it said.

The statement added that the completed forms should designate the person who will serve as vice president. It said that the nomination forms should be in quadruplicate and must be delivered in person by the presidential candidate or two registered voters who have signed the candidate’s nomination forms.

“In addition to the completed application forms, the candidate must submit to the election official four copies of a recent postcard-sized photograph (bust size) on a red background, showing the candidate’s full face and ears,” it added.

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission serves as an electoral official in the presidential elections.

Submitted work

The statement said that completed presidential nomination forms must be delivered to the EC headquarters between 9am and 12pm and between 2pm and 5pm on any given day.

The statement said that presidential candidates will have to pay GH¢100,000 when submitting their nomination forms. The statement said that female presidential candidates and disabled candidates must pay GH¢75,000.

The declaration indicated that the payment was to be made by means of a bank draft and addressed to the name of the Chairman of the Electoral Commission.

Again, the candidate is to deliver the completed parliamentary nomination forms in four copies in person or on his/her behalf by the person proposing or supporting his/her nomination to the Director of Elections of the constituency in which the candidate is seeking election, it said.

In relation to the parliamentary elections, the statement said that completed parliamentary nomination forms “must be attested by the signature or mark of two registered voters as proponents and supporters, and also by the signature of 18 other registered voters in the constituency who have signed the candidate’s nomination forms.

The statement said that nomination forms must be endorsed by the candidate. In addition to the completed nomination forms, the candidate must submit four copies of a recent postcard (bust size) on a red background showing his/her full body.

The statement said candidates seeking to become Members of Parliament would be required to pay a fee of GH¢10,000 to the constituency electoral officer at the time of submitting their nomination forms.

“Payment is to be made by bank transfer and addressed to the Chairman of the Electoral Commission. Female candidates and disabled persons must pay GH¢7,500,” it added.
