Consultation underway for electric vehicle charging points in West Northants

The council is encouraging residents to take part in a consultation on plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

West Northamptonshire County Council has announced plans to expand its charging infrastructure as part of its target to reach net zero emissions by 2045.

The council said a lack of access to charging points was becoming a barrier to people buying electric vehicles and urged residents to take part in the review.

The consultation will end on 1 September.

2020 data on transport emissions in West Northamptonshire showed they account for 45% of the area’s total carbon emissions.

In 2023, the council received £409,000 from the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund to increase the number of charging points.

Rebecca Breese, cabinet member for environment, waste and recycling, said: “We know that lack of access to public charging points is a real barrier that stops people using electric vehicles, so this strategy sets out how we plan to change that.

“It’s really important that we listen to the views of residents, businesses and other stakeholders on these proposals and share with us any ideas and possibilities we may not have thought of.”

Responses to the consultation will be considered before the final strategy is developed.

The council hopes to present a final version at a cabinet meeting in October.
