Elections Ahead: ECI Orders Transfer of Government Officials

Nagpur: To ensure integrity electoral processthis Election Commission of India (ECI) issued directives on Transfer of Officers in Maharashtra ahead of the upcoming Legislative Assembly Elections through two official notifications, one dated July 31 issued by the ECI and the other dated August 1 issued by the state government.
The state government order mentioned the immediate need to initiate transfers of officials in charge of electoral registration, election-related duties and sensitive posts. The directive emphasises compliance with the mandatory guidelines to ensure free and fair elections, directing that officials who have served in the same constituency for more than three years or those serving in their home constituencies should be transferred to other locations.

The ECI letter also reiterated this policy, stating that no official directly associated with electoral duties can continue in his or her current constituency if he or she meets certain criteria.
The directive sets out deadlines for transfers, with officials in Maharashtra having to be transferred by November 30 this year. This is in line with a broader timeline for other states and union territories, including Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir, each of which has its own deadlines.
