Opiyo Wandayi Claims Net Worth of KSh530 Million: “Farms All Over”

Nairobi: Opiyo Wandayi, a candidate for the Cabinet Office for Energy and Petroleum, has revealed that his assets are worth 530 million Kenyan shillings.

Wandayi appeared on Saturday, August 3, before the National Assembly’s verification committee, where he announced his financial status for the first time.

He disclosed that his assets include cash in bank accounts, real estate investments, farms in Siaya, Narok, Kitengela and Migori, as well as residential apartments in Migori and Nairobi.

Wandayi was the second opposition cabinet candidate to appear before the vetting committee.

Before him on the committee was outgoing ODM national chairman John Mbadi, who was nominated to the National Treasury committee.

Mbadi revealed that his net worth is currently 380 million Kenyan shillings.

He stated that his net worth would ideally be 437 million shillings but that 57 million shillings was due to liabilities which consist of parliamentary mortgage loans, Sacco loans and a loan of 12 million shillings from KCB Bank.

Opiyo Wandayi’s Education and Experience

Until his appointment to Wandaya’s cabinet, in addition to being the MP for Ugunja, he also served as the Chairman of the Minority Party in the National Assembly.

He holds a Masters in Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Daystar University (LLB), University of Nairobi (Bachelor of Science in Agriculture) and Kenya Institute of Management (Diploma in Business Administration).

The legislator had experience in the corporate world, including at British American Tobacco (BAT), where he served as regional manager for more than seven years.

Wandayi is set to replace Davis Chirchir, who headed the energy and petroleum department for more than 20 months before being fired in July this year.

Chirchir was later reappointed as chairman of the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

The ongoing power outages, cartel and corruption in the energy sector, exorbitant electricity rates and high fuel prices are some of the key issues that Wandayi pledged to investigate upon confirmation of his appointment.
