Transforming Society: Why should young people consider a career in the social sector?

In India and beyond, the social sector offers many opportunities for young people to make a difference and create a lasting impact. According to the World Economic Forum’s Young India and Work: A Survey of Youth Aspirations report, 19% of young respondents who reportedly showed interest in starting their own business were interested in a career in social work. The social sector has the potential to enrich stakeholders with valuable experiences and broaden perspectives, especially those related to the realities of rural and peri-urban areas.

Sanjay Prakash, Managing Director and CEO, SBI Foundation, shares five compelling reasons why young people should seriously consider a career in the social sector:

1. Opportunity to make a significant impact: Working in the social sector allows individuals to directly contribute to solving some of the most pressing issues facing society today. Whether it is poverty alleviation, education reform, access to healthcare or environmental sustainability, every effort made in the social sector has the potential to bring tangible and meaningful change to the lives of millions of people. This is especially true for urban youth, who are usually sheltered from rural or peri-urban India, due to their upbringing in metropolitan or urban areas.

2. Personal development and growth: Engaging in social sector work provides a unique opportunity for personal development and growth. It challenges individuals to think creatively, solve problems effectively and collaborate with diverse stakeholders such as policy makers, communities, NGOs etc. to achieve shared goals. Working in a dynamic and often resource-constrained environment fosters resilience, adaptability and empathy – qualities that are invaluable in both personal and professional life.

3. Career Versatility and Future Development: Contrary to popular belief, a career in the social sector offers a wide range of career paths and advancement opportunities. From grassroots organizations to international NGOs, social entrepreneurship to corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, there are countless avenues for young professionals to explore and carve out their niche.

4. Supports innovation and creativity: The social sector is a hotbed of innovation and creativity, where individuals are encouraged to think outside the box and develop new solutions to complex challenges. Whether it’s harnessing technology for social good, designing sustainable business models, or advocating for policy change, there are ample opportunities for young professionals to unleash their creativity and make a transformative impact. The ability to innovate and adapt to changing circumstances is essential to effectively address society’s changing needs.

5. Sense of fulfillment and purpose: Perhaps the most compelling reason to pursue a career in the social sector is the profound sense of fulfillment and purpose it brings. Knowing that your work directly contributes to improving the lives of others, even in a small way, brings a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that goes beyond monetary rewards.

In short, the social sector offers a wealth of opportunities for young people to pursue fulfilling and impactful careers that make a difference in the world. By adopting the social sector as a viable career option, youth can not only contribute to building a more just and sustainable society, but also find personal fulfillment and purpose in their professional endeavors.
