NSW government ends remote working as public servants ordered to return to offices

All public servants in New South Wales currently working from home will be required to return to the office as businesses in Sydney’s central business district continue to struggle.

Prime Minister Chris Minns announced that all government employees still working from home will have to return to the office from Tuesday.

The Minnesota government announced this in a government memorandum sent to all departments on Monday.

Businesses operating in the central business district have struggled to become profitable since everyone began working remotely due to the pandemic.

New rules from the Prime Minister’s department ordered that Public servants will now be expected to work in approved office premises every day of the working week.

In cases where limited flexibility will continue to be permitted, solutions for job sharing or reduced working hours, but the majority of employees will return to the office full time.

The memorandum warned that the current remote work arrangements introduced in 2019should not be taken for granted or assumed to be limitless.

“The more we share the experience of work, the more united we become. That means being physically present in our organizations,” he continues.

Civil servants who want to work from home will now have to provide reasons why their hybrid work arrangement is necessary. This will require formal approval.

This approval will be reviewed regularly.
