HEDA Chairman Suraju names 3 sectors with the highest level of corruption, shares details

FCT, Abuja – The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, has said the judiciary is one of the most corrupt sectors in Nigeria.

The anti-corruption expert revealed this in an interview with Legit.ng on Saturday, August 3rd.

Suraju stressed that the judiciary, which should be a check on other branches of government and hold public officials accountable, is instead riddled with corruption.

He said:

“The judiciary should curb abuse of power and uphold the rule of law. However, if the judiciary is under threat and its system is as corrupt as reported, it is difficult to expect other branches of government to respect the law.”

FG calls for judicial reform

Suraju stressed the need for thorough reform of the justice system.

He called on President Bola Tinubu and anti-corruption agencies to focus their efforts on this crucial sector, which includes judges, registrars and those involved in the administration of criminal justice.

Suraju criticised the legislature and government officials (ministers) for corrupt practices.

He recounted a disturbing incident where rice intended for retail sale was instead sold at the market by a government minister.

He said:

“The case where rice intended for humans was sold at market prices instead of being redistributed highlights a serious problem.

“The president’s lack of decisive action on such matters encourages further sabotage and mismanagement, as seen in the case of Beta Edu.”

Tinubu urged to take necessary action

Suraju urged the President to take strong action against corruption in these sectors.

He stressed that effective change requires addressing these issues head-on to prevent further loss of public trust and improve governance.

He said:

“The president must act decisively to address corruption and restore trust in these key institutions.”

In another development, Legit.ng announced that the Egor Local Government Legislature in Edo State has commenced impeachment proceedings against the council chairman, Hon. Eghe Ogbemudia, over allegations of budget inflating and other corrupt activities.
