New Zealand ditches common infant formula standard, will implement its own rules

New Zealand will not adopt a joint Australian-New Zealand infant formula standard, according to Food Safety Minister Andrew Hoggard. After Cabinet discussions, a decision was made to establish a separate New Zealand standard within the next five years.

“We have been seeking a review of the new labelling requirements but unfortunately our Australian counterparts have not been able to comply with these changes,” explained Minister Hoggard. “As a result, New Zealand will continue to work on its own standard. Our priority is to ensure that infant formula remains safe and that consumers can make informed choices based on accurate labelling.”

The decision follows a request from New Zealand for modifications to two specific aspects of the standard relating to labelling restrictions that were deemed inappropriate for the New Zealand context. Despite this, the majority of the common standard is considered beneficial and supported by the industry.

“The Government is committed to the success of the Common Food System and continues to work towards harmonising food standards,” added Minister Hoggard.
