The government may create its own social media platform for Malaysians – Fahmi Fadzil

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said US tech giants, which own social media platforms, are not doing enough to keep Malaysians safe.

Speaking to reporters during the “Himpunan Pembebasan Palestine” rally on August 4, Fahmi said platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and others are profiting from Malaysians without providing them with adequate safety measures.

“Last year, Facebook alone was estimated to have made US$600 million in Malaysia, but what have they done to ensure that the status and use of their platform in Malaysia is safe?” he said, according to the New Straits Times.

“They lack commitment, so we need to investigate and assess the situation. It is not easy to develop your own social media platform, but some countries have tried. We will look into it,” Fahmi added.
